Stand up Against Apartheid in Mauritania
What: On the occasion of the U.S.-African Summit, the US- Mauritania Diaspora is organizing a rally to
denounce the racially motivated policies of President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz against Black Mauritanians. The organizers of the rally are using this high profile forum to raise national and international awareness on the bleak conditions of human rights in Mauritania
When: August 4th, 2014, from 12:00 to 4:00 PM
Where: The National Academy of Sciences
2101 Constitution Avenue, Washington, DC
Who: Mauritanian activists and their allies
Why: President Aziz’s human rights record is bleak. He was a key player in the regime of President Taya
who was responsible for persecuting abolitionists, organizing ethnic cleansing, conducting extra-judicial killings and mass deportations of Black Mauritanians. Now as a president, he is pursuing the same discriminatory policies
Despite the criminalization of slavery in 2007, slavery remains pervasive. The Walk Free Foundation ranked Mauritania number 1 out of 162 countries on its global slavery index 2013. Moreover, since May 2011, his government has engaged in a discriminatory civil registration to deprive a sizable portion of the Black population of their Mauritanian citizenship. To prevent them from registering, the government has deliberately erected nearly insurmountable barriers reminiscent of the Jim Crow Laws, and the Apartheid era.
We want President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz to accept the fact that, Mauritania is a multiracial and multicultural country. Therefore, any attempt to deny the fundamental rights of Black Mauritanians will not be tolerated. We strongly believe that, with political will and good faith, his government can take effective actions to end slavery and adopt concretive measures against racial discrimination.
